Oh Yeah I'm Writing a Book

All---

Whew.  So most of the EMT class is behind me, and I managed to squeak my story into Notes from Undergound.  I also got out a short story submission, and received a rejection.  And, at my straight job, the end of fall crunch is giving way to a bit of a holiday calm.

And so, with all that behind me it strikes me, almost as a revelation: "Oh yeah.  I'm writing a book."

Back to the grindstone that I love best!

In case you don't know about my book, here's the scoop:

Working title: Sublimation
Genre: Psychological suspense

Working tagline: When man is caught between good and evil, he must overcome both.

Working blurb synopsis: Alec Smith is a business man and gambler who plays in the shadowy edges of the law.  Grey Kinjou is an off-the-books federal investigator known as the Detangler, who who holds the Law as sacred.  When a high-stakes gambling operation in Denver results in the bombing of a family home in Iowa City, business man and secret agent find themselves caught up in a battle of fanatics -- some of whom believe Smith to be their figurehead.  Soon Smith realizes that he cannot bluff his way through every situation, and The Detangler must choose between Law and family.  In the dark, a man named Jones smiles and laughs, hoping for their mutual destruction.

Pull quote: “God goes about his business.  The devil goes about his business.  And sin is what they create to to keep mortals distracted so they don't interfere.”

And now... I must put pencil to paper and continue making this thing a reality.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear updates on what you're working on -- and, hey, here's a question for you. Admitting that a working title for a WIP has little chance of ending up the published title, I still would like to nail a title. Without going into any of the reasons why, my three options are Sublimation, Antigone, or The Antigone sublimation. Love to hear what you think! There's a poll for that!

.Nevets.

  1. I love the first. Sounds like a great psychological book. I'm currently in the process of writing a book about memory and secrets. And editing, of course.

  2. I like the first, I'm a sucker for one-word titles. My WIP needs a new title desperately, but I'm drawing a blank. I'm hoping one will appear in the MS as I'm writing.

  3. ooo that sounds very interesting! I esp. like the pull quote! I bet it's gonna be a good one! I'm in submissions purg, but I suppose I'll have to get back to revisions~

    Merry Christmas! <3

  4. The first one. And I'm not working on anything at the moment. You need fallow time, dontcha?

  5. I like the first one.

It sounds like a great book!

I'm currently writing away at the book I've been working on for NaNoWriMo.

  6. Sounds like I'm on the right track with my current working title then. Awesome!

@Clarissa - Are you editing for the first of your books that you're under contract for?

    @Frances - Excellent!

@Danielle - Thanks! I normally prefer slightly longer titles myself, but everything I come up with for this book that's longer (e.g., "The Antigone Sublimation") ends up sounded a little too Robert Ludlum. Good luck with your own title!

@Leigh - Merry Christmas to you, too! I hope your submissions purgatory ends soon.

@Michael - That's actually an interesting way to put it. People talk about time-off and rests all the time, and that never really clicks much with me. Fallow time, though, coming from farm country, does make sense. Hmm.

@G'Eagle - Thanks! And I've been very exciting to read on your blog how you're attacking that NaNo creation. That's fantastic!

  7. Glad you're entering a calm period! I can't imagine all you have to do...

I like the first and the second one...so I'm a lot of help there.

I'm working on two as the mood hits me. One is about a mystery/suspense and the other is action/adventure/sort of sci-fi fantasy....

Hope you have a great weekend!

  8. Um, yeah, you need to finish that book. *coughs*

So far I like Sublimation the best.

  9. @TWC - thanks! It is a relief to be simplifying again, even a little. Your projects sound great! Have fun with those!

@Michelle - Yeah, I am back on it! More mind-breaking fun to come!

  11. I like The Antigone Sublimation; although it looks like I'm in the minority. (And late, but I've refused to call blog bankruptcy yet).

I'm working on a number of short stories, and am thinking about starting my first full-length novel this coming year. It's an extrapolation of my "Sands of Al-Haasra" short (that I extended to a short story, but it felt more like a novel than short).
